Student test scores create bright spot

The 4.7 million second- through eleventh-grade students who participated in the 2011 STAR program showed steady improvement in the four testing areas. Most notably, 54 percent scored proficient or above in English-language arts and 50 percent scored at proficient or above in mathematics, the highest percentage since the program’s inception in 2003 and the state’s ninth-consecutive year of improvement. That’s 2 percent higher than both English-language arts and mathematics scores last year.
