In Albion, school choice led to school closures
Albion used to be a remarkably integrated district. Fifteen years ago, there was a nearly even split between white students and kids of color. Albion schools used to be almost evenly split between white students and students of color. But as families scattered to surrounding districts, student demographics shifted. The district became majority African-American. And the percentage of students from low-income families climbed dramatically.
