Teachers’ unions encounter difficult choices

Laura DeFranco loves her new job teaching math. It took her more than 100 interviews and seven years to finally land a job as a teacher. Now, she’s afraid she might lose it. DeFranco, 32, teaches fifth- and sixth-graders in the Rome City School District’s Academic Intervention Services program. She working with students who didn’t do well enough on the annual exams.
